Project Outline

Central hub of Marunouchi: The Shin-Marunouchi Building ("Shin-Maru Bldg." ) was designed to create a central activity hub in the Marunouchi area by incorporating diverse functions to vitalize the activities and interaction of people and businesses and to leverage synergistic inter-access with existing neighboring buildings such as the Marunouchi Building and Marunouchi OAZO, as well as Tokyo Station and several subway stations, while offering sophisticated functionality as an international business center.

New cityscape in front of Tokyo Station: With a vision that takes into consideration the rich history, culture and tradition of the area as a distinct business district, the plan included the creation of a cityscape in front of Tokyo Station befitting an international business center for a new era. Incorporating a global perspective in the urban cityscape design with the participation of U.K. architect Sir Michael Hopkins as the concept designer, the building was designed to offer a dynamic yet tranquil, unique architectural expression.

Urban environmental initiatives: In order to realize a building that is in true harmony with the environment, a variety of environmental measures were taken at each stage from planning to maintenance and management, including further refinement of proven energy methods and technologies successfully implemented in existing buildings and extensive recycling of waste materials from demolished buildings. In addition, extensive greening measures around the building, including the walls and the rooftop, were applied to reduce the urban heat island effect.
