Built as part of a relocation/construction plan for the former Naha Prefectural Hospital, the Okinawa Prefectural Nanbu Medical Center & Children's Medical Center is an advanced, state-of-the-art medical facility designed to provide various key functions for local healthcare services. It operates as a disaster response hub and critical care center and provides comprehensive medical care for mother’s and children, remote island medical support, a clinical training center, regional medical partnerships and international medical cooperation, as well as general and high-level medical care for the southern part of Okinawa Prefecture, including densely-populated Naha City.
Okinawa has a severe climate and geographical characteristics such as strong and prolonged solar radiation, high temperatures and humidity throughout the year as well as droughts and typhoons, resulting in infrastructure degradation. Thorough consideration was given to these elements, key factors affecting sustainability in Okinawa, in architectural and system designs for the hospital in order to create a facility that meets the growing need for advanced medical services.
