Greened rooftop and tiled roof
Greened rooftop and tiled roof Surface temperature at around 10:00 (Aug. 6, 1998). Outdoor air temperature: 30.6ºC, Total solar irradiance on horizontal plane: 240W/m2. Surface temperature at around 13:30 (Aug. 6, 1998).Outdoor air temperature: 31.6ºC, Total solar irradiance on horizontal plane: 430W/m2.Surface temperature of the greened roof is 7ºC lower than that of the tiled roof. Time-lapse changes in cross-sectional temperature of the greened rooftop (Aug. 3, 1998). While the temperature on grass-top reaches 45ºC, that in soil is stable at 28ºC, and the indoor thermal environment is kept comfortable, with the ceiling surface showing around 30ºC.

Post-occupancy investigations regarding the effects of rooftop greening: The roof of each apartment consists of a tiled gable roof in south and a flat greened roof in north covered with soil and turf of ca. 15cm thickness in total. According to actual measurements, the surface temperature of the greened roof at around 13:30 in midsummer is 7ºC lower than that of the tiled roof. In terms of temperature changes between 10:00 and 13:30, the tiled roof rises by 5ºC from 33-36ºC to 38-41ºC, while the greened roof rises by only 2ºC from 30-32ºC to 32-34ºC. Time-lapse changes in cross-sectional temperature of the greened rooftop (Aug. 3, 1998): While the temperature on the grass-top reaches as high as 45ºC, that in the soil is stable at 28ºC, and the indoor thermal environment is kept comfortable, with the ceiling surface showing around 30ºC. These cases are described based on assessment results obtained using CASBEE.
CASBEE is a method for rating the environmental performance of buildings using Building Environmental Efficiency (BEE) as an indicator, which is based on the results of separate scores obtained for Q-1~Q-3 (Quality) and LR-1~LR-3 (Load Reduction).
