Project Outline

The Faculty of Environmental Engineering of the University of Kitakyushu was constructed in the university zone of the Kitakyushu Science and Research Park under the theme of Environmental Load Reduction (i.e., resource/energy saving). Various measures were employed aimed at realizing a recycling-oriented campus model that makes effective use of the cycle of energy, water and resource and preserves ecosystems. As a campus located in the suburbs, an environmental architectural plan prioritizing harmony with the surrounding environment was prepared: building height was determined to minimize the perceived size of the building, and space for a workshop open to the local community was secured. With the active use of daylight, wind and solar heating in planning environmentally conscious architecture, a recycling/recirculating system was incorporated into the plan so as not to wastefully use water or energy destined for academic activities on the campus.
The exterior plan also aimed at continuity between the surrounding natural ecosystem and green space and water system within the campus. This university is seeking to develop as a university where cutting-edge environmental and information technology are studied.

These cases are described based on assessment results obtained using CASBEE.
CASBEE is a method for rating the environmental performance of buildings using Building Environmental Efficiency (BEE) as an indicator, which is based on the results of separate scores obtained for Q-1~Q-3 (Quality) and LR-1~LR-3 (Load Reduction).
