Kōyama in Nerima Ward is an area where efforts have been made to preserve scenery (particularly green hedges) since the beginning of housing land development there. Over the course of time, this district has been painted with a splendid green matrix. Moreover, the fertile soil in the area has ensured the survival of farmland, albeit in piecemeal fashion. If there is any noise at all in this tranquil urban housing land, it is caused by rollercoasters in the funfair a few hundred meters to the north, as well as the excited voices of the people riding on them. It should be added that this feature is limited to the summer season, when the homes are open to outside air. In other words, the biggest objective of this style of house construction lies in “passive design”, i.e. making houses open to prevailing winds and taking full advantage of sunlight as a heat source while maintaining efficient heat insulation.
