Project Outline

Funabashi Campus Building No. 14 of the College of Science & Technology, Nihon University, was mainly designed and constructed as a campus building central to the education and lives of students. The exterior glass façade symbolizes "a university open to society", expressing a place for education and interchange in student life. The area around the 1st floor student lounge, which has a particularly high degree of transparency, expresses a "wood-like space" in which toggle vibration control structure was incorporated as part of the design feature. This area successfully integrates the existing line of cherry trees with the plaza space. Amid of particularly rapid change in the university environment, classrooms were made IT-compatible and the campus buildings were aimed to be highly flexible, long-life facilities to respond to the diverse needs. Building No. 14 was planned as an environmentally friendly solar-powered building, a model for sustainable buildings. As a campus building of the College of Science & Technology, a cradle of product creation, the design incorporated the latest architectural technology such as natural energy utilization and toggle vibration control technology, which the students can now experience at first hand.
